In the past, stories from Binghampton haven’t been the brightest and best. You’d hear of crime, drugs and boarded up houses. But take time to listen to the stories of Miss Kitty, a longtime Binghampton resident, and Octavius, a successful employee with Wagner Contractors and Binghampton native. You’ll hear of the changes that have taken place here, homes restored, jobs created, and children loved.
At the center of so much of this change is the Binghampton Development Corporation (BDC), whose work in this community includes business development, job training, educational support and housing counseling. Additionally, they support the work of neighborhood associations, prepare tax returns for residents, and coordinate a yearly Christmas Store, allowing parents to purchase new items for their children at affordable prices.
Founded in 2004, the BDC has begun its 10-year celebration of the good that’s begun and continues to grow in this community.
Here’s a snapshot of the past 10 years:
- 584 children served in 3 years through the Christmas Store
- 1,157 tax returns prepared in 7 years
- 941 housing clients in 4 years
- 16 job training graduates, earning an average of $27,040/year
