Stretch wrapping allows you to unify several packages for easier loading and transportation. This process also helps to ensure your products arrive in great condition by unitizing loads so that the products can stay together. The tight binding stabilizes the products, reduces friction and bumping, and offers protection from the elements.

Many companies are still hand wrapping pallets and products. This process is incredibly slow and requires a great deal of labor. Unfortunately, the hard work often fails to pay off as it should. Hand wrapping doesn’t offer the best load unitization, creating only 10% stretch on the film. This is often inadequate for holding loads together in LTL shipping and may result in product damage.

With automated stretch wrappers, you can increase the speed of wrapping, improve load unitization, and reduce the cost of stretch film. Stretch wrappers increase your film’s stretch rate from around 10% to 250% or more. That means your load is stronger and better protected all while using less film.

Stretch Wrapping for Pallets: Protection and Process Improvement

Stretch wrapping gives you a greater level of customization to better protect your products. The film can be applied to the pallet by rotating the pallet on a spinning turntable while a roll carriage holding the film is raised and lowered as it dispenses film. Or you can keep the pallet stationary while an arm rotates around the pallet. The arm holds a roll carriage which, again, raises and lowers as it dispenses film. You can also have the pallet passed through a ring. The film dispenser will travel around the load at a high speed inside the ring. The ring wrapper can be horizontal or vertical.

There are also options to have the wrapping application be fully automatic or semi-automatic. With fully automatic applications, the only human interaction that is required is a forklift driver placing the pallet on a conveyor or into the wrapping zone. The machine will then cycle, wrap the pallet, cut the film, and wipe it down. A conveyor can carry out the load or the forklift driver can remove it.

For semi-automatic applications, the wrapping is applied automatically, but you can manually attach the film to the load, start the machine, or cut the film and wipe it down manually.

As for the turntable machines, you can select high-profile or low profile. High profile machines are designed to only be loaded with forklifts (due to the raised turntable) while low profile machines can be loaded with hand jacks accommodated by a ramp.

You may also choose from the options below for greater customization:

  • Application of a top sheet over the pallet prior to wrapping
  • 20” or 30” film widths (speed’s wrap cycle)
  • Material handling of the pallets, specifically how they are loaded on and removed from conveyors
  • Adjustment of the height of the loads being wrapped
  • Ability to hold down the load while it is being wrapped
