Frustration-free packaging is part of Amazon’s model for success. It includes packaging that is made from 100% recyclable materials and is:
- Designed to ship products in their original packaging.
- Easy to open.
- Designed to eliminate the need for an additional shipping box.
Fulfillment centers and vendors on Amazon’s e-commerce platform must meet these exacting requirements for product packaging, or Amazon won’t ship your products to customers.
Packaging Designed With The Customer In Mind
Frustration-free packaging keeps the customer in mind. The goal is to make it easier for consumers who order through Amazon to open their packages and get to their products quickly. In addition, the company aims to reduce waste from packaging and packing materials further.
In 2008, when Amazon launched the frustration-free concept, only 19 products met the criteria. Today, more than 750,000 products come in frustration-free packaging. This sustainable packaging program has also eliminated 215,000 tons of packing material and 360 million shipping boxes!
Amazon partnered with the International Safe Transit Association to test retailers’ packages and products. They check to see if packaging and products can withstand unexpected transport hazards, including compression, vibration, and falls.
Benefits of Frustration-Free Packaging

- There’s no need for any extra packaging – a box within a box, if you will
- This packaging is highly ergonomic and easy to open
- It’s simpler to pack and unpack because it uses less gum and tape
- It is eco-friendly, made of 100% recyclable materials, and uses less packing material
- It’s easy on the supply chain because it reduces the average package size.
How Does Frustration-Free Packaging Affect Vendors in 2019?
To reduce waste further, Amazon announced enhancements to its frustration-free packaging program requirements in 2019:
- All items that consumers purchase on Amazon and are larger than 18 x 14 x 8 inches or weigh more than 20 pounds or more must be designed and certified as ready-to-ship.
- Packages must attain packaging efficiencies of Tier 1 (frustration-free packaging), Tier 2 (ships in own box) or Tier 3 (prep-free packaging).
All vendors and fulfillment centers were required to comply by August 1, 2019. Amazon also offered an early adopter credit for all packaging certified in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and some other European countries by October 1, 2019.
The Amazon Packaging Support and Supplier Network (APASS), is a third-party group of experts that help vendors test and certify their packaging with Amazon.
